An amazing place worth visiting in Ayia Napa, is the Cavo Greco area. Located in the south-east corner of Cyprus, between Paralimni and Ayia Napa, this small peninsular offers some marvellous views of the flora and the fauna of the area, along with some hidden places to relax and enjoy your holiday.
The origins of the name derived since the Venetian domination and it is Italian for the 'Greek Cape'.
The Cavo Greco area offers a relaxing route when travelling from Paralimni towards Ayia Napa. The starting point is Konnos beach which is hidden under a small hill full of Pine trees. Along the coast there are some natural caves with the most significant to be the Cyclops cave, as it is the biggest in size. In addition, Konnos beach is one of the Ayia Napa beach areas that gained a blue flag for its cleanness, and crystal waters. There is also a kiosk in a relaxing, cool area under the trees by the sea, which offers food and drinks for the swimmers.
Moving forward, towards Konnoi area, there's the small church of Ayioi (Saint) Anargiroi which is built over a sea cave. As it is believed, Ayioi Anargiroi used to live in the cave. Ayioi Anargiroi were Saint Cosmas and Saint Damianos and they used to provide medical help to the locals. Because they would not take any money for their services, they were called Anargiroi (an- means opposed and -argiros means silver as it was the currency of that time). The church was built at the rock above the cave, showing to the sailors of the ancient period that the island was Greek Orthodox.
At the same area there is also a picnic area with built barbecue stands, seats and kiosks.
Ayioi Anargiroi sea caves is a suitable area for scuba diving and a location where Cypriot black dolphins and seals were found.
Moving on to the South-eastern part of the tiny peninsular, there is an old lighthouse which is not currently in use. In addition, that certain area is occupied by French TWR where they own a large mediumwave broadcasting station. The area is private and it creates mast radiators and broadcasts on 1233 kHz with 600kW. (http://www.twr.org/)
Moving on, at the outskirts of the small mountain, you will meet the National forest, a protected natural park of approximately 384,9 acres. The park is protected by the European program, Natura 2000 (http://www.natura.org/ ). Cavo Greko National forest has more than 400 types of plantation and 71 important animal species such as reptiles, bats and bugs. The sea area contains shell species (Charonia tritonis, Pinna nobilis, etc) and the dolphins Tursiops truncates and Stenella coeruleoalba which are protected by national agreements.
The main plantation in the area consists of Phoenican Juniper (Juniperis phoenica) type bush which covers one third of the whole area. The locals call them aoratous or voratous, and it is a known area where they celebrate Green Monday. There are also other types of plants such as Purple false brome (Thero-Brachypodietea) that blossoms during the Easter period, thus Cypriots call the Pasxalies (Easter is Pasxa in Greek). At the Cavo Greco area there are also trees such as Accacia, Eucalyptus and Pines.
At the edgy sea rocks there are several rocky coasts along with sea caves that are hidden under the water. Those caves are suitable for diving, under the supervision of an instructor. According to the local tradition, the caves under the Cavo Greco mountain was the house of the sea monster, to filiko teras (the friendly monster). In the Cavo Greco area there are only two sandy beaches however, not suitable for swimming as the area is rocky and dangerous.
Cavo Greco has an important role for migratory birds, as it is in the middle of Europe, Asia and Africa. However at the same area, visitors might come across with local birds such as the Chukar (Alectoris Graeca), the Black Francolin (Francolinus Francolinus), the Cyprus Scops Owl (Otus Scops Cyprius) and the Little Owl (Athene Noctua). These are some examples of the 350 species that live in Cyprus.
Walking to the vantage point at the peak of the cape, 150 meters above the sea level, is a thrilling experience as someone can enjoy the marvellous views of the sunset in Ayia Napa and if you are risky enough, the sunrise from Protaras at 5am. You can also see as far as Stavrovouni mountain in Larnaca and when the day is clear, the heights above Haifa in Israel are sometimes visible
